My aunt taught me how to knit and crochet when I was seven years old. Even as a child, I would take a pattern in a knitting magazine and look for things I could change - a different neckline, a couple of pockets, shorter or longer sleeves. Some of my earliest results were downright comical. In second grade, I crocheted scarves for several of my classmates as Christmas gifts. Not having as much patience at the age of seven as I do today, I made the scarves a little too short. As a result, no one knew what they were, and I had to explain to them that no, there aren't "armbands", they are meant to be worn around the neck.

When my daughter was born, I gave up my job in the Big City and stayed at home as a full-time mom. Once again, out came the knitting needles. After knitting sweaters for my daughter and my friends' children, I decided to take a couple of sweaters to a nearby boutique. The owner was delighted to have them, and a home-based business was born.

In 1996, the business was officially incorporated, and in 1998, the first website appeared. Custom Design Sweater Studio has been growing steadily ever since. Still a one-person at-home business, the company specializes in hard-to-fit sizes such as very large or very petite adults, and in specialty sweaters such as a colorful sweater with several little motifs for a child who loves clocks, or a sweater with a hand embroidered cello, complete with silver metallic "strings", for a London concert musician. Baby sweater and hat sets are always a popular item, with vibrant or subtle color combinations and adorable buttons (like soccer balls, ladybugs, watermelon slices). The newest section of the website, afghans and stroller blankets, is small but growing. Custom designing is available at no extra charge.
