Vendor Spotlight: Victoria Otto

In January of 2004, Victoria Otto purchased the URL www.victorianheartshoppe.com with no immediate intentions of what to do with it. Looking for an affordable directory to advertise her own thriving business gave her a clear vision of what was to come. Why not make it a community of like-minded entrepreneurs and lovers of the Victorian era? With a pretty pink box in hand and a plan for such a community, Victoria approached her husband Jeff. Many hours (mostly Jeff s) later, Victorian Heart Shoppe was born.

The first year ran in the red as Victoria searched the internet and offered free spots to vendors with Victorian related sites. During the next two years accounts were set up at both Google and Yahoo to participate in pay-per-click advertising programs. In 2008, Victorian Heart Shoppe made front page news at [online] Victoriana Magazine and business exploded. This year has been a dream come true with a 40% growth rate and a wonderfully supportive group of merchants, mostly women, says Victoria. My retirement goals of owning my own business [now businesses] to supplement our income have exceeded even my own expectations.

Victoria would love to be an encouragement to others to never give up on their dreams and to pursue something with a passion . You can t let everyday things get you down, Victoria advises. A business should evolve from one day to the next with constant learning, improvements, assessment, and rededication.

Nancy's Nuggets

My young grandson called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday. He asked me how old I was, and I told him, "62." He was quiet for a moment, and then he asked, "Did you start at 1?"

A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like: "We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods." The little girl was wide-eyed, taking this all in. At last she said, "I sure wish I'd gotten to know you sooner!"

My grandson was visiting one day when he asked, "Grandma, do you know how you and God are alike?" I mentally polished my halo while I asked, "No, how are we alike?" "You're both old," he replied.

A little girl was diligently pounding away on her grandfather's word processor. She told him she was writing a story. "What's it about"? he asked her. 'I don't know,' she replied. "I can't read!"

When my grandson Billy and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside to keep from attracting pesky insects. Still, a few fireflies followed us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, "It's no use, Grandpa. The mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights."

When my grandson asked me how old I was, I teasingly replied, "I'm not sure." "Look in your underwear, Grandpa," he advised. "mine says, I'm four to six."

Ponder This

Why do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front.

Why do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke.

Why do banks leave both doors open and then chain the pens to the counters.

Why do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage.

Why do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight.

Why do they have drive-up ATM machines with Braille lettering.

Why don't you ever see the headline 'Psychic Wins $20MM in the Lottery'?

Why is 'abbreviated' such a long word?

Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwashing liquid made with real lemons?

Why isn't there mouse-flavored cat food?

Why didn't Noah swat those two mosquitoes?

Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections?

If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal?
