One night shortly after my divorce, I was at my kitchen table wondering what I was going to do with the rest of my life. On a whim I started to write down the things I love: gardening, cats, quilts, personal gifts. After talking to my mother who lived in another state, we decided in spite of the distance we would try to go into business together. It wasn't that much of a stretch. Every Christmas Mom used to unveil a whole new Barbie and Ken doll wardrobe, replete with a fabulous handmade bridal gown. My brothers got through college getting homemade cookie packages; I made it through high school making Raggedy Ann dolls while Mom made teddy bears; we knew how to pack a mean picnic for those daylong craft fairs. Now 10 yrs old, Bluebird Gardens Quilts and Gifts has made thousands of custom quilts, baby quilts and custom gifts, not to mention chocolate mice, bulb gardens and cat cars out of boxes. Many of the free online recipes are family favorites, as are the tried and true garden tips in the seasonal garden tour. We understand making something personal can be a challenge; we're here to give our customers a helping hand. Although my Mom died shortly after the business was started, her spirit is still with me as I gift wrap baby quilts or make custom gift packages. It was manned by a very pleasant attendant with a ticket machine charging cars $1.40 and coaches $7.00. This parking attendant worked there solid for all of 25 years. Then, one day, he just didn't turn up for work. "Well", said Bristol Zoo Management, "we'd better phone City Council and get them to send a new parking attendant." "Aahhh...no", said the Council, "that parking lot is your responsibility." "No", said Bristol Zoo Management, "the attendant was employed by the City Council. Wasn't he?" "No" insisted the Council. "We thought he was your employee all of these years." Sitting in his villa somewhere on the coast of Spain or on a white sandy beach somewhere, is a bloke who had been taking the parking lot fees, estimated at about $560 per day at the Bristol Zoo for the last 25 years. Assuming 7 days a week, this amounts to just over $7 million! And no one even knows his name! |
