Spotlight Story: Susan Feltman

I've been a knitter all of my life, beginning at age 7. Custom Design Sweater Studio was a natural outgrowth of this life-long love for design and knitting. Originally, I designed and sold baby sweaters and hats at local crafts shows. People have often asked me how I got from there to here, an online business specializing in highly customized garments such as sweaters worn by rock stars, television personalities or comic strip characters. It's been an experience, let me tell you!

Four things helped me along the way:

1. Steer the boat. It s not enough to keep your head down and fill each order as it comes in. You have to have a plan, a goal in mind. Where do you want your business to be in five years?

2. Listen to what people ask you. When I started getting a steady flow of questions like, I see you knit baby sweaters. Can you copy my old favorite sweater and knit it in my size? , I realized that there is a different market out there. Did I plan on knitting replicas of a sweater worn by a horror film star? Not really, but hey, it's fun.

3. Don't be afraid to raise those prices. On the internet, most of your customers don t know what you charged for your products last year. It's not like an actual store, where you have a loyal local following that you might lose if you raise the prices too quickly. My baby sweaters were $35.00; now I charge ten times that for a highly personalized holiday sweater.

4. If you love what you do, show it. Customers really respond to enthusiasm. Be the opposite of the bored sales clerk behind a department store counter. You ll be surprised at the response.

Spotlight Story: Craig Shary

website: www.texaspepperjelly.com business name: Texas Pepper Jelly My name is Craig Sharry and I am the owner of Texas Pepper Jelly. Our website offers over a dozen different Pepper Jelly flavors along with two types of peppers. I am sure we have something to fit everyones tastes.

By now you might be asking yourself what is Pepper Jelly. Well quiet simply it is sweet fruit jelly with nice warm taste of hot peppers. The key I have found is finding the correct blend of fruit and peppers to give you that nice sweet and heat taste. I learned early on that anybody can make a hot pepper jelly. There are dozens of companies that make Jalapeno or Habanero pepper jelly and the stuff is so hot you cant even enjoy it. Now you tell me how can that be good to eat. What I have done is made a jelly that is not only great to eat but I have made a jelly that is a great ingredient in almost any recipe. Check out our Sweet Heat Texas Country Cookbook for recipes that feature our pepper jelly.

Observations on Growing Old

Your kids are becoming you ... and you don't like them ... but your grandchildren are perfect!
Going out is good. Coming home is better!
When people say you look "Great" ... they add "for your age!"
You forget names ... but it's OK because other people forgot they even knew you!!!
The 5 pounds you wanted to lose is now 15 and you have a better chance of losing your keys than the 15 pounds.
Your husband sleeps better on a lounge chair with the TV blaring than he does in bed. It's called his "pre-sleep".
Remember when your mother told you to "Wear clean underwear in case you GET in an accident"? Now you bring clean underwear in case you HAVE an accident!
You miss the days when everything worked with just an "ON" and "OFF" switch.
You use more 4 letter words ..."what?"..."when?" ???
Now that you can afford expensive jewelry, it's not safe to wear it anywhere.
You read 100 pages into a book before you realize you've read it before.
Everybody whispers.
Now that your husband has retired ...you'd give anything if he'd find a job!
You have 3 sizes of clothes in your closet ... 2 of which you will never wear.

Final Thought

The teacher confiscated a rubber band pistol from algebra class because she determined it was a weapon of maths disruption.
