I have always loved buttons, beads, and fabric and have collected all of them for many years. After I retired from teaching, I began to make beaded jewelry for myself and gifts for friends and family. Others liked my creations, so I decided to try selling some things on eBay. I was quite successful, back when eBay wasn't flooded with imports and there were bidders who appreciated handmade jewelry. In 2000, I moved to Gatlinburg, TN, Gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains, and decided to join a group of wonderful artists and craftspersons in the Gatlinburg Arts and Crafts Community. I usually do the three shows that group has had here for many years and I have my jewelry in a gallery in the community. It is good to live where there are so many talented people and where people still come to buy quality crafts. I feel very fortunate to be here. I continue to go to bead and gem shows and buy beads and all I have to do to become inspired is to walk into my bead room and look around. I have told my son he will be getting his inheritance in beads! I especially like working with individuals to create a special piece or something that is "just for them". I prefer gemstones and silver, but also use crystal, pearls, ceramic, pewter, and copper. Lots of times it is hard for me to part with something that I design and make. My wish is for good health and more beads. See Nancies Fancies at www.nanciesfancies.com Hi, I'm Charla and welcome to my yard sale! It's like a real yard sale, only online. I started my online yard sale in July 2001 for a lot of reasons, but mostly after sitting out all day on a lot, in the "Hot" and "Humid" Oklahoma summer with my husband Steve having a real yard sale. Because of his medical problems he couldn't take it anymore. It was out of necessity, we still needed the extra money to cover the medical bills the insurance didn't. I couldn't work outside the home because we live out in the country and I needed to be there in case of an emergency. Someone had to call 911. I searched the web looking for examples of online yard sales, but only found one guy and he only had a list of things for sale, not really my idea of a yard sale. I wouldn't buy anything sight unseen and I didn't think anyone else would either. So with my new digital camera, a gift from our eldest son, I began taking pictures of everything in our real yard sale. I was the first to have an actual, complete with photos and tables, online yard sale at that time. One of those free sites at Yahoo Geocities, which meant that I couldn't list the prices. It was slow going, sales were few and far between. I couldn't afford to be listed in the search engines so most people found me by accident. In 2003 a friend of mine suggested that I open a booth at a local Antique Store in town. That way, I would have a small extra income while the online yard sale was slowly being listed in the search engines. By late 2004 the booth had generated enough extra money that I was able to upgrade the site and list the prices. I also added more items, more pages and now I take PayPal. It's still a work in progress and Steve is doing better now, after the triple by-pass in 2005 and helps me when I need it. In 2008 our little yard sale had 19 sales. It may not seem like a lot, but for us, it was a record. As for 2010, time will tell. See Charla's Yard Sale.com at charlasyardsale.com

From my Weight Loss Journey Blog I began to see parallels between my personal journey towards health, and my Gift Services Business. I m still determined the beginning to succeed in both ventures; however, I m beginning to notice some things. Wrinkles develop with adipose reduction. A tummy tuck is not an option, I will live with the sags & bags. My business suffered last year when I was unable to promote the business due to ill health. It began to develop some sags (orders dropped) and bags (inventory not replenished). Now the lumps & bumps different story, they all seem to be heading south! What used to be love handles have moved from their place of origin and sloooowly slid downward. At my age, it s not a really big deal. My bikini days are far behind me (no pun intended). Especially since they only existed in my imagination. Onward and upward (and downward as it were). This is a good day. Weight loss is a good thing! And bringing happiness to gift recipients is a good thing! There are many bumps on the road to success speed bumps and pot holes. Determination and faith in my products make the destination achievable. Gail was leaving her two small children on the island and commuting by boat to the mainland to work her full time job. When her mother died in 1992, Gail decided to go full time with Miller Designs and commuted down the cellar stairs to her shop after sending Lauren and Jonny off on the school bus. Two years later L.L. Bean was selling Miller Designs ornaments in their Freeport, Maine store. Today, Lauren is a teacher and Jonny is working as an electricians apprentice and L.L. Bean is selling Miller Designs ornaments! Gail's husband, David, a Maine lobsterman helps with her business when his boat is safely tucked into the boatyard for the winter. Gail enjoys using copper, brass and nickel to handcraft affordable barrettes, pins, earrings, napkin rings, copper bracelets and ornaments. The marine and nature designs are inspired by the beautiful Maine coast and the pristine island of Chebeague in Casco Bay.
