Almost Heaven was recently announced as the recipient of the Exporter of the Year Award for 2011 as sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce. Almost Heaven is also a two time recipient of the Governor's Award for Excellence in Exporting (in 1996 and in 1991), and in 1994 we received the SBA Exporter of the Year Award. We have an export department that is familiar with the special packaging requirements of export shipments. When we tell people we have a business making candles, they usually do a double-take. Many imagine us in tie-dye, dipping tapers in a vat of wax. In reality, although we do wear some grungy clothes while we re working (hot wax, fragrance oil and dye can do a number on clothes!) it's actually more precise than that. Every type of candle gets a specific wax and wick, and there s no taper-dipping involved! Candle-making was really a hobby that accidentally became a business. The circumstances were right (I got laid off from my administrative assistant job just as people began telling us we should sell the candles we kept asking them to test for us) and we decided to take a leap of faith. This year marks our 10th in business! Much has happened in that time; business has fluctuated from work 12 hour days busy to what should we do today? slow but the biggest shock came in 2008, when I suddenly went completely deaf. This necessitated some time off when I received bilateral cochlear implants, but luckily my deafness did not affect the way we do business since our store is online-only, with all communication via email. We love making candles; our goal is for each customer to feel that they are special and we created their candles just for them! Visit this vendor at Contemporary Candles. Forgive me if this sounds more like an ad than a newsworthy report. It's difficult to back out of a business that has been a vital part of your life for more than 10 years.
