Vendor Spotlight: Ruth Blackwell

Luvy Bear's Soaps and Scentsations was started back in 2001 on a shoe string budget and a whole lot of prayer. I got into soapmaking for my own skin and the lack of quality handmade soaps in my area. I decided to start offering my soaps at local craft shows and fairs after friends and family urged me on. After several months of toting around heavy displays and boxes and spending countless hours of set up and tear down, I decided that there had to be a better way to do business and so began my website adventure.

Keep in mind that I have no formal computer training. The last time I had worked on a computer was in the early 80's and I thought a window was something you looked out of! Well after numerous sleepless nights reading and learning what and how to do it, some not so nice words uttered my online store began. It's a lot of hard work doing it all myself but this year I will have an assistant which will make the load easier.

I will be launching a second website in the near future. It won't be on the scale that Luvy Bear's and it will feature my handmade specialty teddy bears which I brought into my line in 2002 after a friend told me I needed bears because of my name. Hmm I still owe that friend a big hug and thank you for that idea!

The real key though to my success has been that I offer my customers unique handmade products with personal service and they know who I am because I made sure they saw me as a real person (not just a website). Here's to 2008 being great!

The Hunter

Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other pulls out his phone and calls emergency services.

He gasps to the operater: "Something is wrong with my friend. My friend is dead! My friend is dead! What can I do?"

The operator in a calm, soothing voices replies: "Stay calm. Take it easy. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead."

There is a silence, then a shot is heard.

Back on the phone, the hunter says, "Ok, now what?"

After the Accident

A woman and a man are involved in a car accident on a snowy, cold Monday morning. It's a bad one. Both of their cars are totally demolished but amazingly neither of them are hurt. After they crawl out of their cars, the man is yelling about women drivers.

The woman says, "So, you're a man and I'm a woman. Look at our cars! They are both destroyed. There's nothing left, but we're unhurt. This must be a sign from God that we should be friends and live in peace for the rest of our days".

Flattered, the man replies, "Oh yes, I agree completely, this must be a sign from God!" But you're still at fault ... women shouldn't be allowed to drive. The woman continues, "And look at this, here's another miracle. My car is completely demolished but this bottle of wine didn't break. Surely God wants us to drink this wine and celebrate our good fortune." She hands the bottle to the man.

The man nods his head in agreement, opens it and drinks half the bottle and then hands it back to the woman. The woman takes the bottle, puts the cap back on and hands it back to the man. The man asks, "Aren't you having any?"

The woman replies, "No thanks. I think I'll just wait for the police."

Final Thought

I live on a one-way street that's also a dead end. I'm not sure how I got there.
