I am a member of the MyPoints program. This is a free online program where during the course of the day, I will receive three or four emails with different opportunities. They could be purchase opportunities or surveys or other chances to collect points. Over the course of time, my wife and I have collected thousands of points and we have used them for a variety of "treats". So far this year, we have each converted our points to two dinner cards at Olive Garden, two $25 gas cards from Shell and one $50 gift card from Target. There are hundreds of other ways to spend your points. MyPoints is allowing us to refer other members and receive bonus points. They will then send you an email to get started and you'll be on your way to collecting your own points. You can also then refer friends and relatives if you wish and get bonuses for their referrals. 1. Stay within posted speed limits. The faster you drive, the more fuel you use. 2. Use overdrive gears. They improve the fuel economy of your car during highway driving. 3. Cruise control on highways maintains constant speed and, in most cases, reduces fuel consumption. 4. If you anticipate traffic conditions and don't tailgate, you avoid unnecessary braking and acceleration, improving fuel economy by 5 to 10 percent. 5. Avoid unnecessary idling. Turn off engine if you have to wait. No matter how efficient your car is, unnecessary idling wastes fuel, costs money and pollutes the air. 6. Combine errands. Several short trips taken from a cold start can use twice as much fuel as one trip covering the same distance when the engine is warm. 7. Remove excess weight from trunk. Avoid carrying unneeded items. An extra 100 pounds reduces fuel economy by one to two percent. 8. Keep your engine tuned. Studies show that poorly tuned engines increase fuel consumption by as much as 10 to 20 percent depending on a car's condition. 9. Keep your tires properly inflated and aligned. Underinflated tires cause fuel consumption to increase by six percent. 10. Change your oil. Clean oil reduces wear caused by friction between moving parts and removes harmful substances from the engine. 11. Replace air filters regularly. The air filter keeps impurities in the air from damaging internal engine components. Clogged filters cause up to a 10% increase in fuel consumption. 12. Buy only the octane level gas you need. The higher the octane, the higher the price. Check owner's manual to fine the right octane level for your car. 13. Own a fuel efficient vehicle.
